Red Cross documented Koran abuses
WASHINGTON, May 19 (UPI) --

The Red Cross provided confidential reports to the Pentagon in 2002 and 2003 saying U.S. military personnel in Guantanamo Bay desecrated the Koran.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said Wednesday that although its personnel never witnessed desecration of the Muslim holy book firsthand, representatives investigating alleged abuses of detainees at the Caribbean military base collected and corroborated independent reports of Koran mishandling.

The Red Cross raised the issue with Guantanamo commanders and defense officials in Washington, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Committee spokesman Simon Schorno said the Pentagon prepared detailed guidelines on how U.S. military personnel were to treat the Koran in response to the Red Cross reports.

He said the Red Cross received no further complaints after those guidelines were issued on Jan. 19, 2003.
