I enjoyed "White Squall." A movie I liked even better was "Wind," with Matthew Modine. This is about a group of kids who build a yacht (in the desert!) to compete in the America's Cup. Knowledgeable yachtsmen have said that this film is the most realistic depiction of the exhilaration of yacht racing ever captured on film.
We watch a movie every night, taped from IFC, Sundance, Fox movie channel, Turner Classics, or Plex, all commercial-free, supplemented with occasional pay-per-views for the latest films.
The Indies channels (IFC and Sundance) come up with some real gems. "Diamond Men" was an oddball that we enjoyed a lot.
I do the choosing and taping, and I bypass any film about gays, drug addiction, or with sub-titles. That's about half of the Indies films. The reason is I can't relate to these people and I don't care what happens to them. If I don't care about the characters, I can't stay awake through the movie.
Yes, I know this makes me a "bigot." However, I think that's okay if you only do it in the privacy of your home. |
