If the difference is ideology only, then why doesn't liberal still mean someone who supports personal and economic freedom? Which is what it originally meant. Hence the use of the word "liber," Latin for free.

But you knew that, of course.

Only using Newspeak can, for example, mandatory universal health care be considered a "liberal" idea, because there is nothing of personal or economic freedom in that idea.

Liberal these days means someone who wants to coerce that which they desire through the use of government.
