VENEZUELA:
Chávez threatens ties with U.S. over Posada

Venezuela's president said he'll reconsider diplomatic ties with the United States if Cuban exile Luis Posada Carriles is not extradited.

CARACAS - President Hugo Chávez said Sunday that Venezuela would reconsider its diplomatic ties with Washington if the United States does not extradite a Cuban exile who is wanted for allegedly plotting the 1976 bombing of a Cuban passenger jetliner.

''We can't rush things, but if the United States does not extradite Luis Posada Carriles, we will be forced to reconsider our diplomatic ties,'' said Chávez, speaking during his weekly radio program Hello President.

''We will have to consider whether it's worth having an embassy there, and whether it's worth the United States having an embassy here,'' Chávez added.

Venezuela wants to try the 77-year-old Posada on charges of murder and treason for the Oct. 6, 1976, bombing, which tore apart a Cubana Airlines plane after it took off from Barbados, killing 73 people. Posada, a former CIA operative and a naturalized Venezuelan, is accused of plotting the attack in Caracas.
