Facts are that there were:

1. no major atrociites going on when we went to war with iraq
2. Many of the justifications for war turned out to be bogus
3. War turned out to be much more difficult that we thought
4. Our leaders turned out not to be quick on their feet and we seem to have gotten an instant replay of LBJ,Rusk, and Mac

Some folks here recognized this early. I dont like to be wrong but if we go back in time, i would oppose going to war because the reasons werent as strong as i thought, and perhaps more importantly the folks in charge remind me of the gang who couldnt shoot straight at this point. I dont know how we will ever get a better mideast but i suspect it wont be easy to impose.
I recognize the now we are in ,we must win rationale. It is important not to lose but winning now may be timelines for withdrawl and ultimate three state solution. Do you think the shia are thinking that when they cozy on up to the persians just infuriating sunnis even more? There are realities on the ground that must be factored in and neocon or friedman optimisim needs to be tempered. mike
