Peter, for years the insured, uninsured, and underinsured have regarded ERs as though they were walk-in clinics. ERs, particularly Level I and II trauma centers, are frightfully expensive operations and only rarely pay for themselves. Usually, they account for huge losses on hospital balance sheets. - Holly
