EU demands all research data on Monsanto GM maize
05.23.2005, 10:45 AM

ROME (AFX) - The European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) has demanded from Monsanto all the data the company has gathered on a GM maize product considered to be a risk to health.

'Monsanto has a duty to show us all its research on its MON 863 maize,' said Professor Giorgio Calabrese, a member of the EFSA.

A report yesterday in the London-based Independent on Sunday said internal research by Monsanto showed that guinea pigs fed on the maize developed abnormalities.

Among the points of concern raised in the internal report were kidney malformations and modifications of the blood indicating damage to the immune system.

The newspaper report was rerun in the Italian press. Monsanto's MON 863 product is awaiting EU ratification, which must be granted by agriculture ministers, before it can be marketed.
