The power management (PWM) IC segment is expected to grow 15-18% this year, as compared to 5-10% for the entire semiconductor industry, stated Anton Riedhammer, senior director of PWM ICs of Infineon Technologies.

Growth in the semiconductor industry is slowing down, with the first quarter of this year seeing growth of less than 5%, Riedhammer said.

Despite stronger growth for the PWM IC segment, Riedhammer stated that PWM IC makers have felt price-cutting pressure in the first half of this year. However, the price drops will slow significantly in the second half, and perhaps even stabilize, due to increased demand from the consumer electronics segment.

The PC, consumer electronics and communications industries will be the top three driving forces for the PWM IC industry this year, Riedhammer added.
