The Dems won. They threw two to the sharks. Frist can forget the Presidency. Disagree. The GOP gets most of the stalled nominations approved, can bring up the agreement in any fight over Supreme Court Justices, can point to Dem perfidy if they try this again, and can use the nuclear hammer in response to any failure to live up to the letter or the spirit of the deal. Plus, the GOP saves the filibuster should it ever need it as a minority party--and though I think you disagree, this last point is extremely important. Though I will no doubt be assailed for this, I think the GOP won. The compromise is in the best interests of the country. We can now move towards getting the nominations voted upon. Plus, the rules for the upcoming fight on Supreme Court nominations are set. Look for Rehnquist to retire within the next few days. Reason prevailed. As far as Frist is concerned, remember that it is a rare Senator who becomes Prez. They mostly ascend through the VP route.
