Hello Uncle, it's been a while, how are you doing?

I read your post and agree with your assessment that money won't bring in the number of recruits they need to maintain the present force, much less expand it. In addition the Guard is broken. Those who previously thought they were signing up to be weekend warriors held in reserve for short term emergencies know better and they won't be back. It all adds up to a looming crisis but we're not hearing that from the current crop of military bureaucrats who're afraid to spit without permission from the civilians.

I'm curious to hear your opinion on what could be done. I can't think of any solution short of compulsory service. Maybe they could offer a new recruitment plan where they allowed the recruits some leeway in controlling whether, or how many times, they had to serve in a combat zone. I'm sure that the prospect of going back every 2nd year, or more, to get your ass handed to you by a hostile population of people with different values, religion and culture is not that attractive to those who are currently considering enlistment. Ed

PS. Here's a cite to a post I wrote about Colonel Hackworth.

You won't like the politics of it but you might agree with the main thesis. You must have met up with him sometime, I never did. What did you think of him?
