Google in my opinion is a high risk play on BOTH sides of the fence. Technologically Google has a considerable lead, enough to worry its major competitor (MSFT) that it might become a significant player on Microsoft’s turf.

Obviously with a fierce foe like MS the going might get really tough for Google. However, there are many other aspects and I find it odd that people on an internet message board don’t see the incredible potential for Google. Search is an essential ingredient for any connected activity and our lives are becoming more connected by the day.

The merging of cell phone, PDA, GPS and computer into a single device opens up tremendous opportunities and Google clearly is positioning itself. There likely will be ubiquitous WiFi access within 2 to 3 years allowing these devices to really shine. Even in economic downturns these devices will be essential tools, as for example, they will allow a user to find the best price for most items or services within a specified range. Just imagine the marketing opportunity and therefore advertising/commission revenue potential.

Bottom line is that I think this thread in general underestimates Google’s potential because most view Google within the context of the DOT COM bust. No matter what happened to DOT COM, there will be quite a few companies that will exploit the advantages of connectivity and make big bucks as a result. Google has an excellent chance to be one of those.
