Vietnam no longer suffers the ravages of the war we brought to them, and they are no longer beholden to the USSR nor anybody else. The economic development of Vietnam has been limited by policy rigidity and corruption -- and the Vietnamese pay a steep price for both of these flaws. But the flaws are their own and they will work through them as they see fit. That is what it means to be free -- they are free to work out their own problems. We have problems in the US -- we live in an extraordinarily violent culture with rampant crime, and we glorify our violence by using it as our entertainment.

I wish the people of Vietnam -- those who stayed and saw it through -- the best of luck. As for those who sided with the US and then fled their own country, they are paying the price for being on the losing side. They lost their country and their identity. Their suffering is the confusion of not knowing who they are. I wish them luck in crafting a new identity -- not as Vietnamese because they are no longer that -- but as Americans.
