Illinois Middle School Students Are Invited to Predict the Future for the Chance to Win a $5,000 Scholarship; WIRED Magazine and Pfizer Inc Ask Students to Predict What Life Will Be Like in 2010
SAN FRANCISCO --(Business Wire)-- May 24, 2005 -- WIRED Magazine and Pfizer today invited Illinois sixth, seventh and eighth graders to enter the "Short Bets" scholarship contest, which provides selected finalists with the chance to win a $5,000 scholarship to use toward their college education.
To enter, students place their bet on the future by taking a side to one of the following predictions and supporting their position in a 250 word essay: -0- *T -- 6th GRADE By 2010, a form of extraterrestrial life will be discovered. -- 7th GRADE By 2010, researchers will produce a vaccine that protects against HIV infection. -- 8TH GRADE By 2010, scientists will successfully transplant an internal organ generated from stem cells into a human recipient. *T
Students are encouraged to include any scientific evidence or trends that might support their perspective, as judging will be based on strong scientific reasoning and a solid argument, as well as writing style including spelling and grammar.
Six students, two from each grade level, one on either side of the argument, will be selected from entries across Illinois and those finalists will be asked to present their view of the future live at WIRED NextFest(TM) Education Day on June 24, 2005, at Chicago's Navy Pier. "Education Day" is a free day for teachers, students and non-profits.
"WIRED NextFest gives children the chance to dream about the future and think about what's next. Through activities such as the 'Short Bets' scholarship contest we hope students will be encouraged and inspired to contribute to the innovation of the future," said Drew Schutte, Vice President and Publisher of WIRED Magazine.
"Our future rests in the hands and the minds of today's youth and particularly, the future scientists we educate. WIRED NextFest and the Short Bets program is a way interested students can experience the excitement and rewards of science," said Dr. Peter B. Corr, Pfizer's Senior Vice President for Science and Technology.
The "Short Bets" contest begins today and will accept entries through Monday, June 13, 2005. Winners will be established in 2010, when the predictions are determined to be true or false. Three winners, at that time, will receive a $5,000 scholarship towards college.
The "Short Bets" contest is based on the "Long Bets" concept developed by the Long Now Foundation, an organization dedicated to long term thinking. Long Bets were created to encourage competitive, accountable predictions. (longbets.org)
To enter the Short Bets scholarship contest, Illinois students may obtain an official entry form from their teachers or download the entry form and instructions from www.nextfest.net/shortbets.
