2005-05-24 19:03 (New York)

By Alex Emery
May 24 (Bloomberg) -- BHP Billiton Ltd., the world's largest
mining company, shut down operations at Tintaya, Peru's third-
largest copper mine, after protesters attacked the installations,
a spokeswoman said.
Tintaya produced 118,527 tons of copper last year,
according to the Energy & Mines Ministry. Police reinforcements
had been sent to control about 500 inhabitants who are protesting
for more investment in the area, according to the spokeswoman who
asked not to be identified.
