We are probably just going to have to disagree on the decline issue. Some of you assertions in support of it are questionable, others are not signs of decline, and others while both negative and true are not major.

Doubting and knowing are two very different things.

And you certainly don't know either. I'm assuming none of us here has the magical power to see in to the future. There is no good reason to think that we will be actively fighting with over 100K soliders for the next 10 years, but then of course I don't know that we will not do so. If we are going to assume every possible cost or calamity we can just say "we're all dead" and be done with it.

I am sure there were people like you in the mid 1960s who said we would not be in Vietnam for ten more years and that spending by then for Vietnam would be diminished if non existent.

And there were probably people in '68 who thought we would be fighting in Vietnam for another generation. Both of these groups of people are rather irrelevant to the current conversation.
