Intel to unveil new chip for laptop computer
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 7 (Reuter) - Intel Corp. (INTC) Monday will introduce a speedy Pentium microprocessor, designed specifically for laptop computers, that is smaller, uses less power and generates less heat.
The new Pentium model, previously code-named ``Tillamook,'' is part of Intel's plan to make more microprocessors geared toward portable computers, the fastest growing part of the PC market.
``It's one of the things we have done to help the industry grow,'' said Steve Nachtsheim, Intel vice president in charge of mobile products.
About 20 computer makers Monday will unveil laptops -- one only as thick as two legal pads\ stacked together -- based on the new chip, Intel executives said.
Intel, the world's biggest maker of microprocessors, also is working with leading computer companies to figure out ways to reduce laptop power consumption and extend battery life.
The new mobile Pentium features Intel's MMX multimedia- enhancing technology and comes in two speeds, 200 and 233 megahertz, which are the same as mid- and high-range desktop PCs.
The chip consumes 3.9 watts of electricity, about half that of a desktop model running at comparable speeds, Intel said.
``Intel has traditionally ignored the power issue,'' said Nathan Brookwood, semiconductor industry analyst at market researcher Dataquest. Short battery life is the biggest complaint computer users have about laptops.
But Intel cannot ignore the issue. Laptop computer sales are expected to grow 15 percent to 20 percent a year for the next few years -- faster than the rest of the PC industry. In 1997 alone, about $13 billion worth of laptops will be sold worldwide, Brookwood said.
On Monday, International Business Machines Corp. (IBM), Dell Computer Corp. (DELL), the NEC Computer Systems unit of Packard Bell NEC Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. (HWP) are expected to be some of the manufacturers that will unveil new laptop models to use the new chip, executives said.
