Brian, re: Windows in academia

Thanks much for posting this short but "educational" article.

The Wintel applications interface as the de facto standard is a powerful wave that continues to overpower the lesser ones in virtually all areas of computer-supported endeavor. It has always amazed me that such little weight is given to this simple, but overwhelmingly important, fact when new, non-Windows compatible, platforms are being touted.

Yet such companies as the Gartner Group (referenced in the article) continue to blithely compare the economics of platforms without regard to de facto standards (or even economies of scale, for that matter). This is like saying that, rather than English, one should learn Esperanto to conduct business because of its greater regularity.

Best regards,
Arno
