SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 8, 1996--Next week's Republican National Convention in San Diego will do more than kick off the 1996 presidential campaign: it will also introduce Pacific Bell Mobile Service's (PBMS) cutting-edge wireless communications to the West Coast. Republican convention goers will use the advanced features and functionalities of the GSM-based PCS 1900 system for their wireless communications. Ericsson Inc., headquartered in Richardson, TX, provided the system infrastructure and message center as well as 300 phones for the event.
Pacific Bell's wide coverage area includes the San Diego Convention Center, downtown hotels, tourist attractions, the airport, major transportation corridors and the coastline.
PCS stands for Personal Communications Services, a digital technology that offers superior sound quality and the capacity for multiple communications services, such as voice conversations, paging, text messaging and wireless data transmissions over lightweight handsets.
The PCS digital technology being used at the convention promotes the modern image Republicans are striving for, said J.C. Watts (R-Oklahoma), member of the GOP platform committee. It helps symbolize our focus on the future and our commitment to keeping the U.S. at the forefront of technology.
Ericsson supplied PBMS with a complete system infrastructure including mobile switching centers and base stations as well as the MXE message center. This is Ericsson's second major PCS 1900 system built in the United States. The first system was introduced by Sprint Spectrum in the Washington/Baltimore area last year. Ericsson has several other PCS 1900 systems under construction throughout the U.S. It is also the largest supplier worldwide of GSM based technology, which has been deployed in approximately 100 countries with 150 operators.
Ericsson's PCS 1900, CF 337, handset is small, ultra-lightweight and fits easily into a pocket or a handbag. The phone weighs under 7 ounces and integrates the features of a pager enabling delegates to send and receive short messages. Another feature is voice mail notification. The phone beeps and displays a message to notify you of an awaiting voice mail message.
An additional phone feature includes the subscriber identity module or SIM. The SIM is a small chip that contains network information about the subscriber including their telephone number, calling plan, custom calling features and speed dialing list. It also provides worldwide roaming capabilities to GSM-based systems.
Delegates at the convention will find that the all-digital transmission of the PBMS system provides superior sound quality and reliability as well as built-in complex encryption for maximum privacy and protection, said Jan Anders Dalenstam, Ericsson Inc., Radio Systems. |
