I'm sorry, but I can't see the relevance of the number of countries not yet signing something to how and why the US withdrew from it. If you don't mind, I'd like to end this subject after this post, because there does not seem to be much point talking about the countries who have not supported ICC, along with the US.
contrary to your assertion, many of those that do not recognize its supposed authority ARE democracies with perfectly good human rights records
If you say so. Still, many in this world would rather see the US aligned with Western European democracies than the likes of Pakistan, Iran, and Iraq.
Besides, do note that US had nothing against the court itself. If only Americans would be exempt from any prosecution in it, ever. How is that for having the moral high ground?
Oh, and I forgot to mention Turkey before - arguably the only real democracy in the Middle East besides Israel.
Turkey's human rights record is far from immaculate and they are continuously having their behinds dragged from one international human rights court to another. It is a place I know quite a bit about, having lived there for a while, and if you like, I could tell you quite a bit about why it is not a good idea for you to compare your country with Turkey on matters of international law re human rights abuses.
Finally, is being a small, militarily impotent state really a good excuse for not recognizing this supposed beacon of international justice, the ICC?
Excuse me, have you forgotten for a minute that Monaco is a PRINCIPALITY? Prince does whatever he wants and frankly I don't think he needs a "good excuse" or any excuse at all.
What are you doing comparing your country to a principality? Really... :-) |
