Grainne, I hadn't heard about Abe Lincoln as a gay. Gosh, it was bad enough for me with Cary Grant.

In Googling around, I see that this emanates from a new book by author C. A. Tripp (who, now deceased, happened by coincidence to be gay himself).

The evidence of Lincoln as a gay seems to boil down to his unhappy marriage and the fact that he was known to have shared small beds with other men at times, most particularly a young man named Joshua Speed. The clincher was that Lincoln signed notes to Speed with "Yours Forever," whereas Lincoln did not sign notes to his wife that way.

Seems like an airtight case to me <ggg>.

BTW, I saw a biography of Cary Grant the other night, and learned that he once sued Chevy Chase for intimating that he (Grant) was gay. One of Cary's wives was on the program and said (more or less), "Here they were saying he was gay while he was ****ing me."
