China to scrap export duties on Hong Kong textiles
05.25.2005, 01:02 AM

BEIJING (AFX) - China's Ministry of Commerce said it will scrap export duties on Hong Kong textile products that are produced on the mainland under outward processing arrangements (OPA).

It did not say what the current export duties are on Hong Kong textile OPA exports.

At the same time, Hong Kong textile companies will no longer have to apply for export licenses for their OPA products, the commerce ministry said in a brief statement on its website.

'The decision will be implemented as soon as relevant offices on both sides are ready,' the MoC added.

No further details were provided.

A People's Daily report said that Hong Kong had welcomed the MoC's decision.

'I am glad to note the mainland has responded promptly and favorably to our concerns. The Ministry of Commerce's decision would certainly help eliminate adverse effects to our textile and clothing exports,' the paper quoted John Tsang, Hong Kong's Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology as saying.
