The two instances have similarities as well as differences.

Of the two, I would consider "Piss Christ" by far the more offensive (though certainly not an "atrocity"). The most outrageous aspect of "PC" was that the artist was rewarded with a grant that came from taxpayer funding.

With regard to prisoners of all stripes (pun intended), we need to be realistic. "Prison guard" is not an enviable occupation, nor a highly-paid one. I would guess that as we speak prisoners throughout the globe are being taunted, mocked, and humiliated in small and larger ways. Guards span the normal human range from kindly to sadistic. Prisoners by definition are law-breakers and have forfeited the societal privilege of respect and honor.

I am totally opposed to physical abuse of prisoners by guards or other inmates. I think we need to to do much more to ensure that all those in our prisons are protected from any physical harm.

As to psychological "abuse," as far as I'm concerned, it goes with the territory. Hell, I had some sadistic teachers when I was in school (and many more kindly ones). You can hardly expect more in prisons. You live with it and shut up about it.

As they say, "If you can't do the time, don't do the crime."

We have plenty of real inequities to worry about, and hurting the feelings of prisoners doesn't even make the list.
