Uncle, McClellan seems to have adopted a soldier's point of view. As you know, if you're busy trying to stay alive and you're killing every threat, nasty interrogation techniques don't really stir your blood. That's a narrow perspective but soldiers don't get paid for thinking long term. He asks; "Who cares if we offend Muslims," (by desecrating the Quran) and I think we all should.

How do you think a large percentage of our own population would react if we had Muslim men running around with guns and we thought they were punishing Christians and desecrating our sacred religious symbols?

The Iraqis are a tough people and they won't be herded like sheep. If we care about avoiding additional, gratuitous risks for the soldiers trying to stay alive in Iraq then we should be concerned about allegations that interrogators desecrated the Koran. Especially today when the technology of weaponry is such that one man can create death and destruction for multitudes, if he has the will.

From an even larger perspective, in the long run these types of incidents become proxies for what kind of a people the world thinks we are. If they have some trust in our restraint and our respect for differences they will arm themselves and react differently than if they see us as intolerant and aggressive. There are a lot of nations out there, including billions of Chinese. Their assessment is important; far too important to be waved off with a soldier's "so what" dismissal. Ed
