Car bombs hit Iraq town, up to 30 feared dead or hurt
Mon May 23, 2005 09:02 PM ET

MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - Up to 30 people were feared dead or wounded after two car bombs exploded outside a building housing a Shi'ite organisation in the northern Iraqi town of Tal Afar on Monday, police sources said.

The attack appeared to target a Turkman-Shia sheikh, Hasan Bagdash, police sources said. It was the second failed assassination attempt on Bagdash in recent days.

The force of the blast caused the building to collapse.

"I don't have a final number for the dead or wounded but it's between 20 and 30," a police source in Tal Afar said, adding, "some are still trapped."

The bombings come amid a surge in sectarian violence over the past three weeks, since the formation of a Shi'ite-led government, Iraq's first.

Earlier attacks on Monday killed at least 26 people and wounded 130.
