As Japan discovered, a so-called free float is not very safe either and even a free float is a managed float as long as the implied peg is to the dollar.

Even if China were considering a gold peg, I don't think it would openly talk about it until the last minute. China would want to acquire a considerable amount first at a low cost. Once an such announcement were made, the price would initially rise considerably before settling down again.
