My guess is that he got a administrative or dishonorable discharge in 1972. In 1980 President Carter's amnesty also included upgrading discharges. He can therefore can say with all honesty, "I have an honorable discharge." His website even had a picture of it, but if you check carefully it's dated 1980, not the 1972 or so, it should be.

His problem was that he couldn't say with one breath, "its all ancient history, just ignore it" and with another "I'm qualified to be President because of my military record."

He had to use his military record because his Senate record was so thin. But his military record had its own problems.
