I think unconditional love is great for parents to have towards their children, and for dogs and owners to have for each other.

I don't believe unconditional love towards one's country makes any sense at all. I think it is the patriotic duty of citizens to make an outcry when their country's government goes astray. Just because someone holds political power doesn't mean that they are ethical or will be good leaders. It is civil disobedience and protest marches and journalists questioning shady situations that provide some of the checks and balances that make countries strong.

Re your dog who would run away--how old was it when you got him? I have a theory, but need to know that to see if I might be on the right track.
