A new definition to arrogance and hatred - Al-Kidwa

Al-Kidwa: Bush must solve Palestinian problem or forget his plans for Mideast

By Akiva Eldar, Haaretz Correspondent

Palestinian Foreign Minister Nasser al-Kidwa warned U.S. President George W. Bush to resolve the Palestinian problem or risk the failure of his plans to democratize the Middle East.

In an interview to Haaretz ahead of Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' meeting Thursday with Bush, al-Kidwa said that if Bush does not find a way to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, "He can say goodbye to the American agenda in the Middle East ? democratization in the region and security in Iraq."

In his first interview with an Israeli newspaper since assuming the role of foreign minister, Al-Kidwa told Haaretz that Bush is a strong president who can deepen U.S. involvement in the peace process, and can press Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to carry out his obligations on freezing settlement expansion and dismantling outposts.

Al-Kidwa, a nephew of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, said that these issues would arise in Abbas' meeting with Bush.

The foreign minister termed Israel's settlements in the West Bank and Gaza a "war crime," and warned that the expansion of the Ma'aleh Adumim settlement in order to create territorial contiguity with Jerusalem would kill the vision of two states living side-by-side in peace.

Turning to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's disengagement plan, al-Kidwa said that an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza without handing over control of international crossings to the Palestinians would not be considered by the Palestinians as an end to the occupation in the Strip.

According to al-Kidwa, as long as Israel controls the West Bank, the pullout from Gaza should not be viewed as an end to the occupation.

Al-Kidwa also criticized Sharon for commenting earlier this week in Washington that Israel does not plan to conduct negotiations on Jerusalem. Al-Kidwa slammed the statement as "ridiculous," and one which is an insult to Islam and Christianity.
