I don't think they had a choice in the face of the French referendum on the EU constitution. My guess is that the rhetoric will die down after the Dutch vote and that the positives of the China trade will be accentuated.

However, similar to the situation in the U.S., once the cat is out of the bag it will be difficult to stop enterprising politicians from getting on the protectionism bandwagon. In more ways than one, it looks like we are heading worldwide back into the 20's and 30's.
