I agree with much of what you said about unconditional love. In the context of people or families, unconditional love should not make one blind to faults. Quite the contrary. Those that profess love and yet do not guide and correct where necessary are probably experiencing more of a narcissistic form of love.

As to love of country, I think this defies any kind of analysis, which is why I told my dog story. It is there or it is not. I see it as a visceral thing we recognize in others, or not. I could draw an analogy with alma maters. I know people who have fierce loyalty toward their college and seem to feel genuine love for the institution. In this case, I seem to lack that feeling. I don't know why. I enjoyed the universities I attended, or where I once taught, but I don't feel an emotional attachment to them. I can root against them in a football game if for some reason I want the other school to win.

I think it much the same way with one's land of birth. An awful lot of Frenchmen quite readily switched to the Nazi side, while others died in the resistance. In this case, I just feel a strong love of my country and always have. I never could understand how Grace Kelly could give up her homeland to become a princess in Monaco.

I don't have an explanation as to where these feelings come from, not do I claim superiority over those that don't have them.

I never begrudged "Mr. Chips" his wanderlust. That's just who he was.
