Mac OS X 10.4 - more bling than bang?

More troubling however is that in areas where Mac OS X Tiger does offer impressive potential advantages over its predecessors, these are hampered by poor and often inexplicable interface design decisions. Tiger also loses points by removing features computer users have long taken for granted.

I have to agree with the author mostly. Apple has really dropped the ball on usability nuance.

Although I haven't used Tiger I think $129 is too much for what it is. Additionally I'm afraid Apple does take away functionality.

I'm still using an older version of iTunes because of this.

I'm wondering if the computer world is about to see some backlash. I feel that I don't need to upgrade ANYTHING nearly as much. It can be such a hassle, with lost time and productivity. I've stopped upgrading Photoshop and Illustrator because of bugs. They do what I need I don't need the extra functions particularly if the new functions come with more bugs.

From what I've read Tiger seems to have a ton of bugs too.

This is what I'd pay for in the order of importance to me:

1) Better usability - there are still lots of issues. I can't believe that apple hasn't dumped the Dock and bought Drag Thing. The tabbed function in Drag Thing allows me to ignore the dock which is the graphical equivalent of the Puck. It still makes me angry. The get info function is another pet peeve of mine. OS9 allowed you to select several files and get info on each of them. OSX makes you select and get info about each separately. What a hassle. Nuances, true, but like flies the more there are the more they irratate you.
2) Substantially faster system. Tiger is supposed to be faster but from what I've read it bogs down a lot of people.
3) Substantial new software that can help me make money. I don't see Dashboard Widgets as contributing anything. The indexing search feature seems too performance costly for the time it would save me.
4) Substantial bug fixes. For instance I no longer use Safari because of bugs. The Safari upgrade seems pretty pathetic to me. There are still lot's of bugs in Panther even though we are up to 10.3.9

I wonder how much the success of the iPod has distracted Apple from doing what it should do.

There is enough eye candy already. I don't need any more. I'm sure a bunch of users will buy Tiger (G5 users especially) but I don't think it's going to add a hell of a lot of money to Apple's coffers.
