"...NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- The global semiconductor equipment and materials industry is on track to grow to about $85 billion in annual sales by 2001, up from about $60 billion now, according to the chief official of an industry trade association.

That rapid growth is largely a result of the world-wide boom in computer chips, Stanley Myers said Thursday. Myers is president of Semiconductor Materials and Equipment International, or SEMI, a major trade group for the industry.

Although the industry has experienced ups and downs, most recently last year when chip makers cut spending on equipment amid a rapid decline in the price of memory chips, Myers says the industry expects to average sustainable annual sales growth of roughly 18% to 22%. ..."

Is it just me or is there a disconnect between a four year growth from $60B to $85B and 18% to 22% per annum?
