Ray, I think there are those smaller percentage that are torturing etc. - and the majority who have simply been duped, misled, or basically brainwashed by their own training.
They really believe they are helping there, and serving the US.
I heard one soldier on the radio yesterday - he believes it is his duty to patrol the streets of Baghdad, and believes he is making at least a small difference, doing his part, etc., etc.
They have indoctrinated these guys to believe this.
I don't blame the average soldier - I believe the war planners and misleaders already outlined here: Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, etc, etc.
These men, the planners, and the very few soldiers who actually have tortured etc. must be held accountable.
Our whole system stinks - as you point out with the renditions, and the prisoners shipped to other countries like Uzbekistan, etc.
The people responsible for ordering this all must be held accountable - and it is my hope we can end this, and get the poor souls who believe what they are doing is right back here asap before more are injured or hurt - our people and the Iraqis.
Peace to all here this holiday weekend!
