For many years years I acted as a judge for our regional science fair, usually as head of the judging team. I was also on the Board of Directors of that science fair. We were fairly commonly called to judge school science fairs. Why not get the same people who would be picking the projects that would go to the state science fair and the (then) Westinghouse Science Fair?
One year I was called to judge both the projects at a Hebrew Day School and at an Islamic School.
The science teachers at the Hebrew school pressured us to award prizes to projects "to encourage the children and increase their self esteem". I told the judges to judge as they ordinarily would. Few prizes were awarded. The projects were low quality.
(BTW, if you think I'm anti-Semitic, check out my battles with Evil Vermin.)
The first thing I noticed about the Islamic school was that their trophy case- -the one usually full of football, baseball, track, swimming, ... trophies was full of academic trophies- -awards from previous science fairs, National Honor Society certificates, writing awards, math contest awards.... No athletic awards.
The second thing was that the quality of their projects was well above average. They understood science and the scientific method and applied it. They got a fistful of awards from us. They sent their winners on to the regional fair where they won again.
I guess you'd send your 12-year-old in to blow up that school though.
