No doubt it was always contentious between Reps and Dems. But the majority was bunched towards the middle, slightly conservative or slightly liberal. As you say, they went out for a beer after "work", and that's probably where they reached a compromise that wasn't radical.

Now they have a nuke 'em mentality towards each other, and we have the tyranny of the (slight) majority.
