Actually, the real problem is that Iraq is not really a single nation. There is no shared history, culture, bloodline, etc between all its factions. The only way such a marriage can take place is if it is a shotgun wedding, as per Tito and former Yugoslavia. But once the pressure is off, so is the marriage.

Your view of the Sunni opposition is a common misconception. It is true that during Saddam's reign Sunni Arabs were under less pressure than others. But this is not the same as saying they had it easy and were happy with him. The polls immediately after the fall of Saddam show that even the Sunni Arabs were pretty happy to see him gone. Had the US occupation been a success, it could have been a rising tide that lifted all boats, including the Sunnis.

Your other implied point that I disagree with is the notion of collective punishment and collective blame. *They* are not the ones who are killing everyone in sight. *Some* sunni Arabs are doing this and by bunching all of them with those groups we expanded the influence of the opposition. After all, you cannot expect the average Sunni Arab to trust US or the Iraqi government when we do not hesitate to rest the blame squarely upon their shoulders, can you?
