This episode illustrates an important concept that partisans just can't grasp - when a huge fundamental trend occurs around the world, the domestic US spin on the event is purely for home team consumption. Explaining away an enormous problem with mealy-mouthed qualifications is right up there with screen doors on submarines in the usefulness category. Clinton thought he could parse away his disgraceful personal conduct with legalistic semantics. That was horseshit. He wrecked his credibility and political effectiveness. Bush thinks that America's image as an outside-the-rules rogue can be parsed with mealy-mouthed guidance. That's also horseshit. He wrecked America's credibility and effectiveness. Why? Because you can't name a single country in the world where a majority of public opinion believes the self-serving spin BS. In fact, the only major country in the world whose public has changed its opinion on our Iraq policy is......America. A majority oppose it now. No one else budged an inch from their earlier opposition. Facts are facts. Why isn't the partisan conservative crusade winning over a 60%+ durable majority in the US and abroad? How can such a righteous movement NOT win an easy 2/3-3/4 majority of followers everywhere? No one can answer that.
