The American Psychiatric Assn. dropped homosexuality as a mental disorder because, using scientific analysis, it does not seem to fall into this category.

Yes, well, your characterization of "it does not seem to fall into this category" I don't think would call forth the image of hard, dispassionate, value-blind science at work.

The times-are-a-changing, and this reclassification certainly was to be expected.

I am not wanting to grind an axe here, and only cited this as an example to make a point.

If you can believe (with a straight face) that science was not influenced by socio-political considerations in this case
-- so be it.
