Bush will look like a hero for even mentioning the problem and an idea of how it might be fixed. He has always said "All ideas are on the table...."


Bush has played the SS issue very badly, regardless of what one thinks of his proposals, which it's hard to say, with any concreteness what they are. The Dems have done only marginally better. Not one of the greater moments in political conversations in the history of the republic.

But the SS problem is easily fixed; fix the deficit. And tax all income at the same rate. That puts the crisis, which is so far into the future and the mere attempt to define it subject to so many conditionals as to make it near impossible, that it is, for all intents and purposes, addressed.
