David, I don't know in what way you thought my comments rose-tinted as you wrote nothing unrosed that I could see. On the contrary, you confirmed my idea that Israel is probably a good place in which to invest and that a renaissance is underway, albeit still in the preliminary conflict resolution phase.

So what was the problem with the theory?

Meanwhile, on the DNA side of it, I was basing the brew required on the haplotype link. DNA doesn't lie, unlike some mothers about the origins of their little darlings. That link baz.perlmonk.org isn't working now, so I can't check your Italian/middle-east mix theory.

I'll ask Google if it has another source.

Jews, had a bit to do with India and Google does indeed have some references. For example, we visited a Jewish building in Cochin in 1999 with Indian friends from Cochin. There were obviously quite a few there though apparently not so many now. philtar.ucsm.ac.uk

<There were about 2000 in the 18th century. Today a few small communities remain in the Cochin area and there are about 5000 living in Israel. >

Also - note exiles from Germany, Holland, Aleppo etc, not Italy. <The Jews of the area are divided into three groups “White Jews", “Black Jews” and "Meshuchrarim" (or Freedmen). The White Jews (called "Paradesi", foreigners) are a mixture of Jewish exiles from Cranganore and (later) Spain, Aleppo, Holland and Germany. They follow the Sephardi rite with some Ashkenazi forms.

The Black Jews have separate synagogues from the whites.

The third group, the Meshuchrarim, were manumitted slaves and their offspring were attached to either of the two communities but had no rights (until 1932) to sit in the synagogue or be called to assist in the services (except on Simchat Torah). Influenced by the Indian caste system, the three groups do not intermarry.

The earliest evidence of the settlement of Jews on the Malabar Coast is given by two copper plates in the possession of the congregation of the White Jews. The text of this inscription can now be definitely established as dating to no earlier than 974 and no later than 1020.

This is of interest for my genetic engineering project, which will design and build super-duper smarties. I need to find a good supply of the right DNA. I figure parts of India, Bedouin/Morocco are the place to go hunting. The Anglo-Irish connection seems irrelevant; sorry, but you got the dud stuff by the look of it.
