The P/E: How would you calculate it based on the current quarter or
past 4 quarters or on projections?

Why would number of shares be important? What about market cap
instead?

For P/E: Current P/E. For shares, I like to see smaller shares outstanding so when there is reason for the stock to go up, it doesn't have mega millions of shares to divide up into.
