I don't think first hand of Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo is necessary to decide what one thinks.

Not what one thinks, of course; one can think anything based on anything.

But what one knows is a different issue. IMO, virtually every body reporting anything from either Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo has a political agenda. You mentioned several specific sources. Released detainees have a highly political agenda, and also in many cases lack objectivity about their experiences. The International Red Cross and foreign press have quite political agendas.

I believe we are -- certainly I am, and I think anybody else relying on second and third and fourth hand reports is -- very, very far from knowing what the truth is, even assuming there is such a thing as "the truth" in this situation, which actually I don't think there is. Nor do we have any real sense of what the context is, and as I think all thinking people realize, context is an essential ingredient of understanding.

I also recognize that third party criticism is very easy to do in any aspect of life, particularly one where people are under stress. Monday morning quarterbacking is easy. I try not to fall prey to it myself.
