AMCC Demonstrates ATCA-Based, Multiservice Evaluation Platform at Supercomm 2005 Tuesday May 31, 8:01 am ET Enables OEMs to Drastically Reduce Costs, Risk and Time-to-Market When Developing Next-Generation Networking Solutions AMCC Leverages Proven Design Expertise by Integrating Its End-to-End Communication Devices into a Standards-Based ATCA Chassis and Providing a Total System Solution for OEMs
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 31, 2005-- Applied Micro Circuits Corporation (AMCC) (NASDAQ:AMCC - News) today announced the company's first ATCA standards-based Multiservice Evaluation platform, enabling customers to accelerate their development of packet and cell-based switching chassis. This platform provides one-stop shopping for OEMs by delivering a complete, standards-based system solution including a Control Processor, Network Processor, Packet/Cell-based Switch, Framers, and SERDES functions for Multiservice switch/router, Wireline Access (DSLAM, CMTS, Media Gateway), Wireless Access (RNC, GGSN, SGSN), Metro Aggregation (MSPP), and Data Center (WLAN, L4-7) applications.
ADVERTISEMENT AMCC's ATCA Multiservice Evaluation platform provides OEMs with a low-risk factor when developing next-generation networking solutions. It enables "plug-and-play" of standards-based hardware for rapid application software development and reduced time to market.
"AMCC's ATCA Platform delivers a highly integrated, standards-based and easy-to-use solution for accelerating development cycles," said Mark Hunsicker, vice president of marketing for AMCC's Communications Group. "This solution replaces proprietary chassis and evaluation boards featuring individual products from AMCC and other vendors. With AMCC's vast expertise in the communications market, we have the unique ability to integrate multiple devices into a standards-based ATCA chassis and deliver nearly all of the key components of this platform, which reduces development costs, time-to-market and risk to customers."
The nP3710 network processor-based ATCA line card and the PRS 80G-based ATCA packet/cell switch card represent the key elements of the ATCA evaluation platform. The nP3710 network processor is a 5-Gbps integrated network processor and traffic manager that implements the complete core functionality of a high-performance networking system. The PRS 80G switch chip, along with the PRS C48X and PRS C192X switch fabric interface chips, are designed to address the needs of a wide range of high-bandwidth demanding applications in Metro Ethernet, WAN multiservice, wireless infrastructure, and enterprise equipment. The nP3710 ATCA Line Card includes support for Control Plane Processing functions, via an on-board PowerPC 440GP processor. The PowerPC 440GP embedded processor offers exceptional performance, design flexibility, and robust features geared to demanding networking, storage, and other embedded applications. AMCC's EVROS and TIGRIS devices are also critical components of the platform, providing high-density channelization, data termination and mapping capabilities.
The modularity of the main nP3710 ATCA Line Card allows for additional PMC (PCI Mezzanine Cards) to be developed to support other framer and SERDES devices, such as AMCC's OHIO path terminating framing devices. Various versions of AMCC's PowerPC-based PMCs can also be developed to support different control plane processing functions and requirements. AMCC is also integrating production-quality application software running on the nP3710, including ATM, MLPPP, IMA and MLFR.
