The crosses on the graves are not endorsements of religion by a governmental body.
To make it easy -- suppose that the US, like, say, Saudi Arabia, had a state sponsored religion, and only state-endorsed symbolism was allowed in public. Oh, let's say, the religion was Christian, and no matter what religion you belonged to, when you died, a cross was placed on your grave.
Seems un-American, doesn't it?
Because, as we all know, in Arlington cemetery, some graves have crosses and some have Stars of David and some don't have either. This was what the families of the deceased chose. arlingtoncemetery.org |
