Holly - Isn't it great to have no state tax? :-)

Personally, I like it much better to be taxed on what I consume (through VAT) than what I earn (through state tax) even if most of what I earn is saved. Relying on VAT for tax revenues, the state taxes not only the residents but also the tourists who enjoy the place for its infrastructure & grooming. I think it's a great idea.

When he and Mrs. Long were here, I was on the receiving end of much disapproval for my admittedly occasional indulgence in gambling

At the time, were you also blowing your cigarette smoke in his general direction? -g-

I don't have anything against gambling. It is just another expensive hobby. Just with shopping, you just need to stop before you go bankrupt.

I've never been into gambling, because the odds largely favor the house and I don't like being cheated. The only couple of times I played in a casino was years ago in Almaty (Kazakhstan) when I had to stay in the Ankara Hotel for five days until the next plane back home. Outside, it was too hot in the daytime and too dangerous in the nighttime - and there really was nothing to see. I read three books with a total of 1,042 pages, and watched so much Cartoon Network (the only channel in English) that I would see little colored figures darting around when I closed my eyes.

So, in my fit of boredom, I went down to the hotel casino twice & played blackjack - the only game I know where the player has a bit of a chance of winning against the house. Put down $100 and left when I had about $200.

The real fun of that casino experience was listening to the conversations (in Turkish, a language they felt none of the clients would understand) of the casino staff about the clients, and the women in particular. Kind of like being a fly on the wall. Wow, was that an eye-opener about men's real thoughts/conversations about us women! -g-
