Re PBX's.

I work selling into the Telco industry and Steve is right. Until recently, the trend was for PBX's to get more and more complex and proprietary.

What is happening now is a smaller, more basic switching capability, and all the intelligence moving offboard onto a PC. This is for medium to larger businesses. In terms of PC volumes, the real 'sea change' is probably at the smaller end. A very small business can now get most of the facilities of a large PBX year or two ago using nothing more than a PC, a board, and the right software. Plus, with integrated telecommunications/internet connectivity and teh ability to do much ore sophisticated things in terms of call analysis/logging/tracking/monitoring etc. Much easier to code that on a PC than a proprietary PBX designed just to switch calls.

PBX vendors will have to go with this trend or lose business, and many small companies are arising selling these products because its very easy to put something together.
