The French index of confidence among purchasing managers in the manufacturing sector fell in May to 48.8 points from 49.8 points in April owing to a fall of new orders, the French purchasing managers' organisation CDAF said on Wednesday.

This was the lowest level since September 2003, the CDAF said.

A figure above 50 points to expansion and a smaller figure to contraction.

CDAF said that the survey behind the index "shows a further deterioration of the economic environment for businesses in this sector."
