Anatomy of a Rumor
Several people emailed me regarding Shell, so I put this together for reference.

Ignore post #2360. Thanks to Seb Maitra for correct information. "FOUND" the "PTUS"/Shell
alliance in my archives.

From: TokyoMex Sep 6 7:06PM Reply #2369
I distictively didn't see Shell being mentioned at the TPRO meet. I do remember Fluor in the bag
and continuing nego with 10 top Fortune 50s. From here my interpretation. Lest some SOBS
call SEC. As for the big Pharmaceutical deal. I expect contract news to com ein timely manner.

Seb, re Shell Svcs, you know I thought it was PTUS, but having not written it down,
and having seen Shell rumored on this thread, I just thought perhaps it might have been
TPRO. I should have taken extra time to do my own research... good thing we got
that straightened out when the market was closed!

HOW RUMOR GOT STARTED

Can somebody confirm that TPRO just sign a contract with Shell?

OH DOVAN, OH DOVAN, OH DOVAN, OHHH! You must be from the OTHER side of Johnnie OH's family! < To All, Can somebody confirm that TPRO just sign a contract with Shell? #2337, Sep 5 1997 6:53PM>

Sweetheart, if you're right ... I'll be the FIRST person, on bended knees, apologizing profusely for "getting down on you". It would be great news ... but, until you prove yourself on THIS thread ... your credibility is limited. SORRY
............................................................CK SIDEBAR: I WAS pretty hard on Dovan.
............................................................I'm very skeptical when I check someone's profile,
...........................................................and the one & only post he ever made on this
............................................................or any thread, was an un-substantiated rumor.

Dovan, can you enlighten us on the source of your unconfirmed Shell rumor- you better be
careful or your tongue will be cut out by big brother!!!

From: richard p. martino Sep 5 10:45PM Reply #2354
Dovan, I tried to check out a possible contract with Shell, and found something interesting on
the Shell web site (link below). It appears that Shell is offering a service they call
"Renew 2000" to assess and address Y2K compliance. What I found interesting is that
they have apparently already partnered with Viasoft. Naturally, this doesn't necessarily
preclude them from also incorporating Topro's compliance test software and/or
services. Comments? ms.shellus.com

Re: Shell Services Contract Rumor. This is the closest site I can find:
shellus.com

It looks like Shells current Y2K offering is pretty weak. It would make sense that
Shell would become a reseller for TPRO since Shell Services seems to be dedicating
a lot of their resources to provide Y2K services to their clients. I think the Shell rumor
may have some substance to it from a speculative point of view. If anything, this rumor
demonstrates that TPRO does have a huge market potential.

From: Jeffrey S. Mitchell Sep 6 12:20AM Reply #2356
This is not a rumor, it's a fact. I heard it myself. A Shell Services alliance was
announced at the Cruttenden Roth Conference. Problem is, don't kill me, I can't
remember who mentioned it. I suppose it had to be TPRO, but I never wrote it down
in my notes. Should have brought my tape recorder :=(. Sure hope they weren't
mentioned as competition, but I remember being really impressed with the news.

I did write down that TPRO has market specific alliances with PacificCorp and Ch2m
Hill. I know you guys have mentioned the former, but I can't find any reference to the
latter. Is that new? NOTE: Jeff posted retraction after going thru notes - Thanks Jeff

From: David C Mapes Sep 6 7:06AM Reply #2360
Spent past hour searching my archives for the Shell alliance. No Luck.
From what I can remember, TPRO and an IT service division of Shell are
planning to provide y2k service to ALL oil companies for embedded systems
in factories. Sorry, can't confirm. May not be completely accurate. (ie. embedded
vs total factory systems)

Cheryl, I certainly appreciate your efforts to keep this thread "pure",
however I want to enter a note of caution. dovan's post is appearing to be a genuine and
possible valid heads up that would never have been researched with out his effort.
This kind of birddoging is one of the strengths of this and many other threads and while caution is
necessary we need to take care to encourage it, not discourage it. By the way, I think it was
presented appropriately.

From: Seb Maitra Sep 6 3:33PM Reply #2365
Shell and Peritus have announced a joint marketing effort on Sept 2. Here is the url:
biz.yahoo.com
I think a possible collaboration between TPRO and Shell is not unlikely at all.

From: Steve Woas Sep 6 3:38PM Reply #2366
Cheryl, I also think you were too hard on the guy. Recently I was reading tea leaves while
using my calculator that I always keep by my computer.. Starting with 71,075,345--- I
added 2000 ( For TPRO) and came up with 71077345. Now this in itself would be
no big deal. However, when you turn the calculator upside down it reads: SHELL OIL
So, it could have some merit. :-)

There apparently was/is no basis for TPRO/Shell contract rumor.
