"natural selection" is a good starting point, but the theories of how evolution works have themselves evolved beyond Darwin's original hypothesis. In particular evolution does not appear to work gradually with a regular rate of mutations, but instead works in fits and starts as mutations arise that actually do something usefull.

There is still no definitive word on how the first life on this planet started. That is one reason why Mars is interesting, to see if life is relatively easy to start, or very difficult.
