Gib, it's true that the cynical comment "best politicians money can buy" contradicts the idea that people get the government they deserve, but both are true.

People don't have to be influenced by the wealthy pork-barreling lobbyists when they vote.

As happened in NZ in 1984 and again in 1987 and even more so then, enough people realized their personal vested interests were smaller than the benefits of overall deregulation that they ditched the pork barrel ideas. The change was substantial.

It's an interesting election looming in NZ. Helengrad must be quaking in its boots after the latest poll.
